Trip Overview

The Tambopata Jungle is located in the department of Madre de Dios, a 30-minute boat ride from the city of Puerto Maldonado. It can be reached from Lima or Cusco by flying to the Puerto Maldonado Airport. For a more economical option, traveling by car from Cusco takes more than 8 hours. Therefore, we recommend traveling by plane. This allows you to enjoy more time in the Tambopata National Reserve, which covers 274,690 hectares (1,061 square miles) of preserved land in southeastern Peru. The reserve has many diverse habitats, including lowland Amazon rainforest, riparian forests, and horseshoe lakes. It is crossed by three rivers: the Malinowski, Tambopata, and Madre de Dios rivers.

The Tambopata National Reserve is home to 1,200 species of butterflies, 169 species of mammals, approximately 632 species of birds, and hundreds of species of trees and plants. In fact, this reserve and the surrounding region are some of the most biodiverse places on the planet. The Tambopata Jungle is also home to diverse ethnic groups such as the Matsiguenka, Shipiba, and Ese-Eja. Many indigenous families still make their homes in the Tambopata Rainforest buffer zone.

The Tambopata Rainforest is one of the last remaining and most extensive areas of pristine rainforest. Tambopata is one of the few areas that contains lowland and pre-Andean rainforests, but it also connects with cloud forests at higher elevations and humid savannas. Furthermore, very few people lived in the more remote areas of Tambopata. Conservationists realized that the region could act as an important corridor between Manu National Park and the rainforests of Bolivia. The area also supported healthy populations of tapirs, jaguars and other cats, giant otters, harpy eagles, many types of macaws, and other animals that had disappeared from other parts of the Amazon.

Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado City, our Transfer or guide, will welcome you and drive you to our headquarters in town for a few minutes. In our office, it’s mandatory to pack only the necessary stuff for the next few days; the main luggage will stay at our safe deposit. Our guides are experienced professionals with deep knowledge of the area and rainforest, after 2-hour bus and a 1/2 boat journey we will get to Amazon Lodge Accommodation where you will have a little rest. This afternoon you will explore a two to three-kilometer hike in a primary forest, you will learn about the most important medicinal plants and the same time you will have a great chance to spot different species of monkeys, birds that will make your jungle walk unforgettable. At The visit to our 50 mts canopy tower will complete this first experience. As well you can do a night walk looking for the elusive nocturnal creatures and critters, like the impressive ground bird-eating Tarantula (as big as your hand). Then you will have a dinner at the lodge.

We will visit one of nature’s wonders, the spectacular Chuncho clay lick, the largest in the world. Here, green-winged, scarlet, and blue-and-gold macaws gather simultaneously, as well as several species of smaller parrots that descend to feed on the clay. We will depart at 4:00 am, and then discreetly position ourselves at a camouflaged lookout point, located eighty meters from the cliff. Today, we will have breakfast on our boat trip. Along the way to the clay lick, we have a good chance of seeing capybaras, caimans, and perhaps, if we are lucky, jaguars or tapirs (the two most unique land mammals in the Amazon).

We will return to the lodge for lunch. After a good rest, we will pack up and prepare for a river adventure: kayaking on the river or in the stream, depending on your expectations. It is a beautiful activity with a great chance of spotting capybaras, turtles, and river birds during this two-hour trip. We’ll explore the jungle again at night, when most insects are active. You might see spiders, tarantulas, and even snakes. On the way back, we’ll try to spot nocturnal wildlife along the riverbank; if we’re lucky, we might spot a rare species. Dinner at the lodge.

Today we will have an early breakfast at our lodge. After coordinating with the naturalist guide and depending on your interest, we will explore a five- to eight-kilometer trail through the typical tropical rainforest, with immense trees crisscrossed by streams and ponds. Among fig trees, ceiba trees, and Shihuahuacos, we will search for the clay lick, home to mammals such as squirrels, brown capuchin monkeys, red howler monkeys, and peccaries. We will then return for lunch. In the afternoon, we will visit our spectacular canopy tower, the tallest and most robust in the region at 50 meters high, to see canopy birds, possibly monkeys, and a different and impressive view of the mighty jungle. The waters of the Tambopata River offer a wide variety of fish, such as payaras, pacu (giant piranha), and catfish (zúngaros, piros, surubines, etc.). We usually fish for two hours on our third afternoon; with our local fishermen, we always have a good chance of catching some species. If you’d like to catch piranhas, we’d be happy to do so.

Back in Puerto Maldonado, after breakfast, we will transfer to the city’s main port to begin another motorboat trip within the reserve. This time, our destination is the famous and beautiful Lake Sandoval. This is a meander in the Tambopata National Reserve. After approximately a 40-minute boat ride, we will begin a 3-km hike through the forest until we reach the lake’s shore. From the start of our tour, we will visit this beautiful body of water. The place is spectacular, with an abundance of birds, and a great opportunity to see monkeys, such as the red howler monkey, the brown capuchin, the squirrel monkey, the dusky tamarin, and the saddle-backed tamarin. There is a 40% chance of seeing river otters. We will have lunch on the shores of the lake. At noon, it is time to say goodbye, as the expedition comes to an end. FAQ

How to Get to Tambopata

To get to the Tambopata National Reserve you first need to go to Puerto Maldonado. Puerto Maldonado is the gateway city to the reserve and the capital of Madre de Dios. There are daily incoming flights to Puerto Maldonado. These flights arrive from Lima or Cuzco, at least three times a day.

The flights from Lima depart from Jorge Chavez Airport’s domestic flight terminal. Direct flights take about 1 hour and 40 minutes. There are flights from Cusco departing from the domestic terminal of the Velasco Astete airport, with a duration of 45 minutes. Take note that this varies according to the airline.

We do not recommend arriving or departing to/from Puerto Maldonado by bus, as the highway is unsafe.

When to travel to Tambopata?

Tambopata is mildly seasonal. Although it can rain at any time of year, it is driest from April to November, when the rains begin and end, respectively. The rainiest months are January and February, but even during this time, many travelers want to experience the Amazon rainforest. The advantages of visiting during the dry season are that there is very little chance of rain affecting your activities. The advantages of visiting during the rainy season are that the macaws are most active in the clay beds and are nesting. If you like macaws, come between December and February, when nesting season is in full swing.

What is the weather like in Tambopata?

The lowland rainforests of Tambopata lie far enough south of the Equator to provide a cooler, drier winter season between May and October. The general weather conditions are warm and humid. In Tambopata, the average daytime high temperature is between 78F and 93F (24C and 31C) The average nighttime low is between 66F and 78 F (20C and 24C). Cold Fronts – May through September Cold fronts from Argentina can sweep into southwestern Amazonia and push daytime highs down to 50° F (9° C) and the nighttime lows to 43° F (5° C). Thus, during that season always be potentially prepared for cold and drizzle. Rainy Months – November through April Be prepared for heavy rain that can continue for hours or days. Around 80% of the annual average 3000 mm rainfall occurs during this season.

What kind of luggage should I bring?

Your luggage is hand-carried by our staff at various stages of the trip for a long distance. We strongly recommend you limit your weight to 15 kilos (33 pounds apiece). You can leave your large luggage in our office at Puerto Maldonado. If you are visiting other destinations in Peru or South America that require different kinds of clothing, you can always pack separate bags and safely leave them at our offices in Puerto Maldonado on the first day so we won’t be carrying them around uselessly. Your bag will be waiting for you at the airport the day you leave

What should I pack ?
  • Binoculars
  • Camera gear, bring your long lens!
  • Light-colored, long cotton pants
  • Long-sleeved, light-colored cotton shirts
  • Ankle-high hiking boots and sneakers
  • Flashlight (headlamp) with batteries
  • Sunblock lotion
  • Sunglasses
  • Broad-brimmed hat
  • Rain suit or poncho
  • Insect repellent
  • Small-denomination bills
  • Small daypack
Should I pack rubber boots?

Around the lobby, you will find racks with rubber boots arranged by size. The largest size we have is 46 Peru, 12.5 US or 30.5 cm. You can use these boots for your walks or outings into the forest. Please remember that when walking inside the lodge facilities and in order to prevent bringing mud inside, you must take out your boots or muddy shoes. We suggest using sandals, clean sneakers, slippers, or socks. During the rainy season, the corridors to your rooms get wet, so we recommend bringing light anti-slip slippers to avoid getting your socks wet.

What is the best age to bring my kids to the lodge?

Tambopata is undoubtedly one of the best places to connect with nature. However, being a remote place, these are our recommendations:

Children under 3 years old – Due to the weather conditions, location, and orientation of our activities, we do not suggest traveling with children under 3 years of age. Remember that our activities are in group service. Private service is available at an additional cost.

From 3 to 7 years old – For little adventurers, we recommend our Tambopata lodges. These ecolodges have a playground and activities designed for children. Take note that there are some activities that require getting up early.

Take note that the guides will suggest the recommended activities for your little ones, however, you know them better and you know how much they can walk or not.

Remember that our guides interpret the forest for you and your little one, but they will not be able to help you by carrying them in case they get tired.

From 8 to more – If your child is adventurous and is used to taking walks for more than 1 hour, the Tambopata Jungle is ideal.

While each of our lodges has a topic equipped with everything needed for any emergencies, remember to take your personal first-aid kit with the medicines authorized by your GP in case of any allergic reaction, among others.

When will I see the most animals?

In all honesty, no month is particularly better to see animals than any other. While you will have more sunlight to see parrots and macaws at the clay lick during the dry season, other animals are encountered with the same frequency no matter what the time of the year. A much bigger factor that comes into play for seeing Amazonian wildlife is the guide’s level of experience and training. From July to September, we have the most jaguar observations along the river banks.

When is the best time to see monkeys?

If you visit Tambopata rainforest lodges, you have a very good chance of seeing several monkey species throughout the year. The rollicking calls of Dusky Titis echo from vine tangles, Red Howler Monkeys call from the canopy, and troops of Squirrel Monkeys roam through second-growth near oxbow lakes. Black Spider Monkeys may be a bit easier to find during the wet season because it’s usually easier to locate the fruiting trees they feed on but a good guide will increase your chances of seeing them no matter what the time of the year.

What inoculations are required for Tambopata?

While the Peruvian Amazon is an incredible place to visit, make sure you prepare well for your travel to Peru by packing efficiently and getting the recommended vaccinations. Before you travel to Puerto Maldonado or other places in the Peruvian Amazon, visit a health care provider specializing in Travel Medicine who can tell you which vaccinations are recommended due to your health and vaccination history. It is best to see this physician 4-6 weeks prior to your travel to allow time for vaccinations to take effect. You should mention each country you are visiting on your trip in order to receive appropriate advice for all of your travel destinations. While there are no required vaccinations for travel to Peru, the United States Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has the following recommendations:

Hepatitus A: Vaccination is recommended to all travelers to Peru.

Hepatitus B: Vaccination recommended to all travelers to Peru, especially those who may have exposure to blood or body fluids through the giving or receiving of medical care, drug injections, tattooing, or sexual contact with the local population.

Typhoid Fever: Vaccination is recommended to all travelers to tropical South America especially those who may be staying in rural areas where exposure through food or water could occur.

Yellow Fever: Vaccination is highly recommended for travel to Amazonia and the Southern Amazon basin. The shot should be given at least 10 days before your arrival and at 10-year intervals if you decide to stay.

Rabies: Vaccination is ONLY recommended to travelers with an increased risk of exposure including long-term travelers living in an area that poses a high risk of exposure, travelers working in occupations who will have direct contact with bats, stray dogs, and cats, or other mammals such as veterinarians, wildlife professionals or researchers.

What happens in the case of a medical emergency?

In case of emergencies, we have a first aid kit that is equipped to deal with most cases that may reasonably arise in the area. Our guides are all certified by the Red Cross, which means they are prepared to deal with foreseeable emergencies (broken bones or snake bites, for example) but not complex emergencies (such as appendicitis). For snake bites, unheard of at Tambopata so far, we have extractors and an anti-venom at the lodges. In case of evacuation, we need to travel by boat to Puerto Maldonado. During the day, evacuations take about 20% less time than our regular boats. During the night, evacuations take about 30% more. In Puerto Maldonado, there is access to a state clinic.

Is leishmaniasis or malaria present?

Leishmaniasis is present throughout the rain forests of southeastern Peru. It is a skin lesion caused by a protozoan transmitted by a certain kind of small biting fly. There is no vaccination against it but it is curable in every case. The selected cure, injections of pentavalent antimony (Glucantime), is uncomfortable. Leishmaniasis is also very easy to prevent by wearing long-sleeved shirts, pants, and repellent on exposed skin at all times, and sleeping under mosquito nets. If you are interested in receiving complete information on leishmaniasis contact us before your trip. Malaria  is present but extremely rare. If you wish to take medical precautions against malaria consult your physician or a specialist in tropical medicine.

Is there a safe in my room?

We ask you to keep your valuable belongings and documents in the safe. Do not leave them valuables in plain view. Equally, if you have food or candies, please keep them in the safe. Do not leave them outside. This way you will avoid attracting insects and other animals. Ask the lodge manager or guide to inform you about the proper use of the safety box.

Is there electricity at the lodge?

The lodge is run mainly through a generator. Communications are powered by solar energy and there is wireless internet available at night. We use LED bulbs in public areas at night.

Can I drink the water?

We provide natural spring water 24 hours per day. Please use the water wisely. We advise you not to drink the water from the river, lake, or any of the taps. Consumable water can be found throughout the lodge from many dispensers and pitchers as well as a variety of other beverages available. All the water that the lodge provides is purified with an ozone treatment. We also suggest that you use this water to brush your teeth. Please turn off the water flow while lathering and soaping up to reduce unnecessary water usage.

What can I expect in the rooms?

Our open and spacious rooms offer lots of natural light and fresh air while providing safe but close contact with the forest environment. Our rooms allow you to connect with nature, but no worries nothing will enter into your room. The lodge and rooms are 3 meters away from the forest and 1 meter and half above the ground. Each room is also equipped with private bathrooms for your convenience. The use of mosquito netting on each bed is strongly recommended to ensure your comfort and safety. We try to be as eco-friendly as possible so we request that you only change towels when really needed. At your room, we kindly ask that you lower your voice to allow all guests to enjoy the sounds of the forest.

Is there a phone at the lodge?

We do not have a telephone available in our lodge. In case of emergency, we could get a cell phone signal, only at the Lodge reception. We do have WIFI, nevertheless, we invite you to enjoy a digital detox.

Is smoking allowed?

Smoking is allowed in the lobby and bar except at mealtimes. Please do not smoke in your room, the dining rooms, boats, or during activities

What are the meal times?

Breakfast time depends on your scheduled activity according to the lodge. Your guide will advise on this at the lodge. Regular breakfast is at 7:15hrs. Lunch is served at 13:00hrs and dinner is served at 19:30hrs. Please let us know if you are vegetarian or have any special dietary needs. We do offer a special menu for children, if need it, please inquire in advance.

About gratuities

Tipping is not compulsory. If, however, you have received excellent service and would like to leave a token of your thanks, the following are the guidelines:

Guide:  USD$ 10-12 per guest per day

Lodge staff: USD$ 5 per guest per day

We would like to emphasize that tipping is definitely not a requirement but should be undertaken only by choice and dependent on service received. Whatever you believe to be appropriate will be appreciated by the staff you have met.

DO I NEED ANY VACCINATIONS BEFORE VISITING AMAZON RAINFOREST?

 Andean Great Treks

Vaccines recommended for travelers to the Amazon often include hepatitis A and B, typhoid, and yellow fever. Visit your doctor four to six weeks before your trip for the latest recommendations and requirements for your destination. You may be advised to start taking malaria pills around this time.

The US Center for Disease Control is an excellent resource for detailed information on preventing travel related illnesses.

IS THE AMAZON RAINFOREST SAFE?

 Andean Great Treks

To stay safe in the Amazon, travelers should eat sensibly, dress appropriately and apply repellent to minimize the chance of getting bitten by mosquitos, and take the necessary vaccinations, medication and precautions as recommended by your doctor.

When hiking, canoeing, and enjoying other jungle activities you should always stay with your group and follow your guide’s advice. We also recommend that you leave valuable jewelry, watches and electronics at home, and where possible use a money belt and any room safes at your disposal to store passports and important documents.

WHAT SHOULD I PACK?

 Andean Great Treks

Bring comfortable walking shoes, light-weight long pants, and long-sleeved tops, a wide-brimmed hat, sunscreen, extra socks, mosquito repellent with DEET, bathing suits and of course, waterproof ponchos with hoods to protect against rain your camera, with charger and extra batteries on excursions. Binoculars are very important to enjoy the wildlife. Do not forget to include some items that you can give away to the locals (t-shirts, pens, and paper are especially prized, and perhaps some chocolates or candies for little kids). During meals in the dining room, we ask our guests to wear casual clothing and shoes. We provide rubber boots for wetland excursions and wet landings, and recommend taking comfortable walking shoes.

SHOULD I BUY TRAVEL INSURANCE?

 Andean Great Treks

Travelers are strongly advised to purchase trip cancellation insurance which will reimburse the cost of air tickets and other non-refundable trip payments. AMAZON RAINFOREST TOURS FAQs

DO I NEED A VISA TO TRAVEL TO THE AMAZON?

To enter the countries in the Amazon Rainforest, you will need a valid passport. However, visitors from most countries do not need a visa, provided their visit will be shorter than 90 days. If you plan to stay longer, you will need to request a visa in your home country.

IS THE CUISINE AS GOOD AS I’VE BEEN TOLD? CAN I GET A SPECIAL DIET?

Yes. The food is simply world class. Our guests enjoy a menu of fresh, delicious Peruvian fare (with a bit of continental influence). Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner each day promises to be a culinary feast for the senses, paired with select South American wines or perhaps a freshly pressed juice. If you have special dietary requests, please inform Andean Great Treks at the time of booking, or at least by 30 days prior to start the Amazon Tours, because some items may have to be ordered from local markets in advance. Every effort will be made to cater to special dietary needs and to accommodate special requests, subject to a given products’ availability in Peru.

IS IT EASY TO SPOT WILDLIFE IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST TOURS?

Amazon wildlife is abundant, but you have to know where to look. Many creatures are weary of humans and often camouflaged. Our expert naturalist guides will help you spot and identify animals with their local knowledge, tracking experience, and remarkable eagle-eyesight and trained ears.

Many can even mimic bird and monkey calls to attract them! In general, the longer you spend in the region and deeper you can travel into the rainforest, the more chance of spotting wildlife you see. A decent set of binoculars will also go a long way to help.

ARE THERE MORE NATURAL WAYS TO COMBAT MOSQUITOES AND INSECTS?

Taking vitamin B12 is a more natural way to gain some resistance to mosquitoes. It can be ingested as vitamin pills or found in some foods with high levels of B12 such as shellfish (clams, oysters, mussels), fish, crustaceans (crabs), soy products (milk, tofu), bran cereals, red meat (lamb, beef), low fat milk, select cheeses, and eggs. We suggest taking B12 supplements around 2-3 weeks before arriving in Amazon Rainforest.

DO YOU WELCOME FAMILIES WITH CHILDREN?

Yes. We warmly welcome families with children aged 7 or older. Our lodges are comfortable to receive families with their children. Additional accommodation for one child is available in some Lodges. Our naturalist guides are very friendly with kids and all of our staff will provide the necessary care for your family. We also have survivor jungle trails, piranha catch-and-release fishing experiences in Iquitos, and meal menus for kids.

OUR TRAVELS SHAPE YOURS

OUR TRAVELS SHAPE YOURS

“Your inspiration for a trip can be a single word or a highly evolved outline, but it’s the conversations we have that help us understand the experience you’re looking for. Meanwhile, I’m looking back on the time I spent at the destination.

‘The great thing about working with a specialist at Andean Great Treks is how they take your  complete jumble of ideas and turn them into  something absolutely spectacular.’

As you begin to share your ideas with your specialist, it will connect them immediately back to a time in their own travels. Conjuring a picture of the rest time they made that same discovery, reminding them how it felt.

Your specialist understands that, when the journey is right, it has the power to excite your emotions in the most profound ways after all, that was the effect on them.

They carry a treasure box of moments, captured over many  journeys, into every suggestion they’ll share with you, as  they ask you how you want to feel on your trip.

MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES, REAL CONNECTIONS

MEANINGFUL EXPERIENCES, REAL CONNECTIONS

EXPERIENCES THAT CALL TO YOU

It’s what you do in a destination that helps bring it to life. It’s why we strive to choose experiences that help you connect to a place, absorbing a little of its complex character. Wherever your passions lie, we’ll recommend experiences that speak to you, and we’ll recommend the guide or local expert who’s most qualified to help you explore. Packing your holiday full of special experiences means some early starts and long days, but you can be sure that you’ll return home with many incredible memories! Read our Tours and check the Physical Ratings to see if the pace and activity levels are right for you.

STAYS WITH DIFFERENCE

We know that where you stay is a cherished part of your travels. So, we go to great lengths to find places to stay that exceed expectations, or go above and beyond the ordinary, whether in their character, hospitality, or location. Over the years, we’ve discovered the very best properties, trying and testing them, so we can choose the right one for you. We’ve nourished long-standing relationships with these establishments and the people who founded them, and we’ve stayed there many times often, we’ll even know which rooms have the best views (and reserve them for you).

TRAVELLING THE RIGHT WAY

TRAVELLING THE RIGHT WAY

Our style of travel — authentic, thoughtful, and focused on building meaningful connections to the people and places you visit — is inherently respectful and considerate of the destinations we love. We design each aspect of your trip exactly as you want it, which includes its sustainability. That might mean choosing a train journey instead of a flight, staying at eco-friendly wildlife lodges, or opting for experiences that give back to the communities you’re visiting. The choice is yours.

Responsible travel has always been at the heart of what we do. First and foremost, because it gives you the best experience, but, also because it helps to preserve the communities and landscapes you visit. This isn’t new for us we collaborated with local communities and outside experts so we can grow to be better ambassadors.

The most authentic and interesting experiences often directly benefit the local people. We prefer to buy local products that are produced in the organic farms, we also have alliances with local artisan organizations who provide us with souvenir items for our clients, your money directly benefits the local economy.

WE EXPLORE WITHOUT AFFECTING THE ECOSYSTEM

WE EXPLORE WITHOUT AFFECTING THE ECOSYSTEM

We want travel to change us, and not the World

‘There’s a saying: we don’t inherit the Earth from our ancestors, we borrow it from our children. When we show you our country, this philosophy guides everything we do. It’s our responsibility to preserve the environment and wildlife, and support communities. That means using slower modes of transport, like cycling, employing local people, and working with communities who’ll benefit directly from your visit. This also gives you the best, most authentic impression of the places we want to share with you.

We prefer to buy local products in ecological bags, to avoid the use of plastic bags, likewise we teach the use of soaps and ecological products in each tour that we organize. We also work on reforestation projects with local communities who take care of landscape resources such as communal reserves, national parks.
