If you prefer a more authentic adventure, you can choose to reach Iquitos by boat. There are boats that leave from cities such as Pucallpa and Yurimaguas, offering a picturesque trip through the Amazon River. This option can take several days, but it allows you to fully immerse yourself in the jungle atmosphere.
This option of traveling to Iquitos by river is more recommended for super adventurous travelers, since spending several days without the usual comfort is somewhat uncomfortable. In most of the boats the sanitary conditions of the beds and bathrooms are very basic, and you will be alone relaxing in a hammock bothered by mosquitoes. Normally all the passageways of the boats are full of people sleeping and talking.
If your starting point is Lima and you don’t want to take a plane, this is the closest point to the capital to take a boat. You will have to travel by road to Pucallpa and from there embark on the Ucayali River to Iquitos. The trip can take about 5 days on average, depending on the level of the river and the boat.
Tips: Although meals are included and street vendors board at each stop, it is recommended to bring some cookies or fruit, as well as a bottle of mineral water. As the trip times depend on the load of the boat, check as soon as you arrive in Pucallpa. If the boat is already available, you can jump on to save a spot.
