The Vilcabamba Trek is one of the most challenging and remote trekking routes in the Peruvian Andes, connecting two of the most impressive archaeological sites: Choquequirao (known as the “sacred sister” of Machu Picchu) and Vitkos, one of the last remaining places where the Incas lived. The tour culminates at Machu Picchu. This route, which traverses the Vilcabamba mountain range, offers a unique combination of history, nature, and adventure, passing through diverse landscapes such as deep canyons, cloud forests, and snow-capped peaks. Unlike more touristy routes, this one is ideal for experienced travelers seeking solitude and an authentic connection with Inca culture and Andean biodiversity.

During the eight-day Vilcabamba Trek, visitors will walk an original Inca trail that maintains many sections of its originality, as built by the Inca architects. The Vilcabamba Trek is considered extremely demanding, with distances of 15 to 20 km per day, steep elevation changes (such as the 1,500-meter descent to the Apurímac and subsequent climbs), and unpredictable weather, ranging from the hot, dry valleys to the intense cold of the Minas Victoria and Choquetakarpo passes at over 4,000 meters. The best season is from April to October, as there is usually little rainfall. Although the hike is arduous, the Vilcabamba Trek is a transformative experience, reserved for those who wish to follow in the footsteps of the last Incas in almost untouched landscapes.

Andean Great Treks organizes the Vilcabamba trek only on a private basis. We require a minimum of two participants and a maximum of eight. Our groups are led by an expert tour guide specializing in the Vilcabamba, Choquequirao, and Machu Picchu routes. You will also be assisted by our expert cooks in preparing lunches, breakfasts, and dinners, with the best balance of protein, carbohydrates, and, of course, water for your daily routine. The team also includes muleteers who are responsible for carrying all camping equipment, food, and backpacks. Hikers only carry their small backpacks and trekking poles. For the Vilcabamba Trek, you should prepare several months in advance, taking short hikes in your country. We recommend arriving in Cusco at least three days in advance to allow time for acclimatization to the altitude.

The Tambopata Jungle is located in the department of Madre de Dios, a 30-minute boat ride from the city of Puerto Maldonado. It can be reached from Lima or Cusco by flying to the Puerto Maldonado Airport. For a more economical option, traveling by car from Cusco takes more than 8 hours. Therefore, we recommend traveling by plane. This allows you to enjoy more time in the Tambopata National Reserve, which covers 274,690 hectares (1,061 square miles) of preserved land in southeastern Peru. The reserve has many diverse habitats, including lowland Amazon rainforest, riparian forests, and horseshoe lakes. It is crossed by three rivers: the Malinowski, Tambopata, and Madre de Dios rivers.

The Tambopata Rainforest is one of the last remaining and most extensive areas of pristine rainforest. Tambopata is one of the few areas that contains lowland and pre-Andean rainforests, but it also connects with cloud forests at higher elevations and humid savannas. Furthermore, very few people lived in the more remote areas of Tambopata. Conservationists realized that the region could act as an important corridor between Manu National Park and the rainforests of Bolivia. The area also supported healthy populations of tapirs, jaguars and other cats, giant otters, harpy eagles, many types of macaws, and other animals that had disappeared from other parts of the Amazon.

Our 3-day Ayahuasca retreat in Peru, has been developed by an Amazonian healer. The retreat is conducted in a traditional manner according to the Incan principle of Munay or love. This principle is applied to the way the plant medicine is prepared and the iqaros or shamanic chants are sung. The traditional basis of the retreat is tempered with modern medical practices to ensure the safety of our guests and allow them to assimilate the experience in the best possible way. This retreat includes two Ayahuasca ceremonies.

Ayahuasca is a powerful indigenous alternative medicine that is helping many people to find their inner being and their divinity. The mother plant Ayahuasca grows in the Amazon jungle of South America and therefore the best place to perform an Ayahuasca ceremony is in the jungle.

We have developed a unique Ayahuasca retreat in the sacred valley of Cusco very close to Machu Picchu. Ayahuasca is a psychedelic infusion composed of the extract of two Amazonian plants, Ayahuasca and Chacruno. It has psychedelic effects such as altered thinking, loss of sense of time and strong emotions for those who take it. In addition to hearing or seeing things that do not exist. For this reason, in recent years it has become incredibly popular to travel to spiritual retreats with Ayahuasca in the middle of the Peruvian Amazon; these ceremonies are useful for traveling to the unconscious, connecting with nature and relieving both physical and mental pain.

Participate in an Ayahuasca retreat in Cusco; Ayahuasca is the Quechua name to refer both to the liquid resulting from the slow decoction of an Amazonian vine called Banisteriopsis caapi, and to the vine itself, which contains the compounds Harmine, Harmaline and Tetrahydroharmine.

Based on the liana decoction called ayahuasca, each Amazonian group or each healer adds different plants with the aim of communicating with a specific spirit depending on the disease they are going to treat, or the specific ritual they are going to perform. Ethnographic studies have reported that there are more than 5,000 different recipes to prepare Ayahuasca and more than 200 plants that can be added to the decoction.

In pre-Columbian times, it was believed that the healer or commonly called shaman had a great capacity to make contact with his extrasensory consciousness through psychophysical techniques and/or the intake of psychotropic substances. In this way they managed to enter a state of consciousness that provided them with divinatory and therapeutic wisdom.

The great Inca Trail that united in the past two of the most exquisite citadels of the Incas is still in use to be able to visit it and explore its beautiful landscapes that surround it. Andean Great Treks has designed this impressive trekking route, which visits the archaeological sites of Choquequirao, the sacred mountain of Salkantay, the mythical Inca trail to Machu Picchu.
If you are a traveler who loves culture and a lot of high-level hiking activity, this route will surely surprise you, for everything it offers. You will travel through ancient inca trail used by the messengers of the Incas the Chasqui. This site is located at more than three thousand meters and its architecture is unique in the entire empire of the Incas, currently only less than 30% of its original design can be seen, since over time this site was covered by large trees and bushes.
Afterwards we will hike from the base of the snowy Salkantay to the Inca Chiriasqa pass, following the most preserved original Inca trail and with many temples, houses, shrines of the Incas. This sector stands out among others for the incredible scenic beauty from the valleys, to the high peaks, and the deep jungles of tropical forests, finally leading us to the fabulous sacred city of the Incas, Machu Picchu.

The walk to one of the last sacred cities of the Incas, nestled in the Apurimac river canyon, we refer to the Choquequirao Trek.  An impressive place that was built by the Incas in their expansion stage to the territory of the Amazon jungle.
The archaeological complex of Choquequirao is considered one of the sites with a lot of history and fine stone finishes, built on the flanks and mountains with a steep slope. Currently only less than 30% of the total area has been discovered, which is hidden by thick cloud forest.
The trek to Choquequirao is cataloged as one of the hardest in Peru, because in a single day you descend more than a thousand meters, and the next day ascend again up to 3 thousand meters. But making such a physical effort is worth it, since not many visitors a year manage to reach the Inca sanctuary of Choquequirao, the views from the high peaks are simply spectacular, with wonderful sunsets.

Explore the South Valley of Cusco. And the oldest still inhabited city in South America. In this long south  valley of cusco with more of  than 15 km, in the last stage of the glacial period of the Pleistocene, it was occupied by a large lake, whose name is from a researcher “Lake Morkill”. The fossils found in various parts of the valley show that it was inhabited by the Plesitocene megafauna, such as Andean horses, giant sloths, mammoths, Paleolamas.

The first appearances of hominids in the Cusco valley date from 8,000 to 10,000 BC. This is how these men become sedentary hunters and gatherers, and then form the first local cultures such as Killque, Chanapata, Qotaqalli, Marcavalles. Between 200 and 500 AD, the Tiahuanaco ethnic group invaded the valley of Cusco, and during 800 AD, this fertile valley was conquered by the Wari empire.

Those who make one of the largest constructions of urban settlements and roads in southern Peru, part of that great Wari city is still possible to appreciate in the archaeological site of Pikillaqta. In 1200 possibly the first regional confederations of the Incas appeared, as a local culture, centuries later it would become the largest empire in South America, they made one of the hydraulic wonders still in force until today in Tipon. With the Spanish invasion, the religious congregations imposed their religion, and the construction of the most lavish Catholic temples in architecture and arts, such as the famous Cusco school, many of these artists were the indigenous people who captured their art in the Sistine Chapel of Andahuaylillas.

Waqrapukara the archaeological site is located in the District of Acos, Province of Acomayo, Department of Cusco. It is strategically located joining the Apurimac valley and the Pomacanchi plateau, it is a cultural landscape with cognitive elements of wisdom and power, where two rocky protuberances rise, with an architecture camouflaged with carved stones.

Adapted to the monument, walled with walls of semicircular containment, with stairways, trapezoidal windows and niches, enclosures, accesses to small spaces, a central plaza facing east with trapezoidal constructions with one, double and triple jambs, including a stone for ceremonies or “Waka” and a “Machay” or cave; All these elements are found at the foot of the rocky protuberances, whose architectural characteristics make us infer that this space was ceremonial and sacred and probably had other functions for its time.

This archaeological complex called Waqrapukara. According to researcher Dr. Victor Angles Vargas, etymologically it comes from two words, waqra means horn and the word pukara means fortress or barracks. In short, this word waqrapukara means fortress in the form of a horn. It was a residence of the nobility of this place; with astronomical observatories and at the same time it was a protected religious center with watchtowers and underground paths.
